5 Step guide to clear tarnish from Silver Jewellery : Cleaning Silver


Silver turning black is the normal scenario it occurs because of coming in contact with the sulphur present in the air and forming black layer because of the chemical reaction. And cosmetic products also helps in increasing the oxidation process.

So if someone tells you that the black layer present in the silver is because of the less amount of silver in it or its not silver is not true. Black layer coming in the silver is a normal thing. As every metal is corrosive in nature so as silver. You can slow down the tarnishing process but can't prevent it totally.

For slowing down the process you should clean it from time to time. For cleaning, you can use brush and detergent. Don't use chemicals and acid for regular cleaning. For removing the black year or tarnish from your silver jewellery here is the process. This is the cheapest method you will find on the internet. 

5 step guide for cleaning silver jewellery and silver cutlery

Items required :

  • Aluminium foil
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Pan
  • Water
1. Place the aluminium foil evenly on the surface of the pan. Keep in mind the shiny side up. You don't need any new kind of foil for this just use the regular one you use to wrap your food.


2. Now fill the pan up to three inches from foil with water and put it on stove or burner and turn on the stove. Let the water boils and you see the bubbles coming.


3. After you see bubbles coming now add the salt and baking soda in it. Mix it gently using a spoon but be careful about the aluminium foil don't tear. And let the mixture boil for a few minutes.

4. Now put your silver jewellery and cutlery into the mixture and make sure the silver objects are completely into the mixture. Now wait for some minutes and you will see the black layer is getting removed from silver and sitting on the aluminium foil.

5. After 2-3 minutes of boiling silver objects with mixture take out them using a tong and gently rub them using a clean cotton cloth or a towel.

Hurray, Your silver is new again.
